Raw Cacao

When you hear about all the amazing health benefits of chocolate you are not hearing about the milk chocolate bar in the grocery store, or the container of cocoa powder on the baking isle.

You are hearing about raw cacao.  We always wish that food that was good for us tasted good.  Well, here is a magnificent example of how nature has indeed arranged that.

The seed of a fruit of an Amazonian tree, cacao has the highest concentrates of antioxidants of any food on the planet.  It is the #1 source of magnesium, iron, chromium and is also extremely high in PEA (the chemical we produce when we are in love), theobromine (cardiovascular support), and anandamide (the endorphin we produce when we workout or the "bliss chemical"). Raw Chocolate balances brain chemistry, builds strong bones, is a natural aphrodisiac, elevates your mood and energy and increases longevity.

Add that to the fact that the flavor of chocolate sends most of us into rapture and you have one of the top superfoods on earth.

What's the difference between cocoa and cacao?  Pay attention to the vowels now...

Raw cacao is unroasted, raw beans that have been cold pressed.  The life giving enzymes, antioxidants and vital nutrients are kept alive and the fat is removed (cacao butter).

Cocoa is cacao beans that have been roasted at high temperatures, which changes the molecular structure, kills most of the enzymes and substantially lowers the nutritional content.

Raw cacao is so easy to get into your diet.  Add it by the spoonful to smoothies, chia pudding, hot blender drinks, cakes, frostings and overnight oats.

I promise you will feel like you are treating yourself, but you are actually eating a life supporting superfood so be generous!

Raw cacao is pretty easy to come by these days.  Most health food stores stock it.  I still find it most economical to buy it online and here is a link to the brand I personally use. That's for the 1 lb. bag.  The 2 lb. bag is a really great deal.  Get it here.  I like a lot of chocolate in my life.

David Wolfe is pretty much the world expert on Superfoods.  You can find many, many videos on Youtube where he speaks about various ingredients, induding (I think his favorite) chocolate.  Below is a Ted Talk he did on cacao that goes into detail about its benefits.

To learn more about a number of Superfoods indepth, I recommend David Wolfe's book Superfoods.  It's very interesting to know the history of these amazing substances, most of which have been used for thousands of years.

This book also contains some wild recipes blending powerful and interesting combinations of Superfoods.
